Grey tactile indicators are the option for buildings where the marking has to blend discreetly into the interior. The situation arises often in practice: a client has to meet accessibility requirements, but a bright yellow strip breaks the design concept. Grey reconciles the two — it sits in the same register as concrete and porcelain stoneware, while the tactile function is retained in full.

One thing needs to be clear here: a grey indicator works through touch rather than vision. The diamond relief underfoot and at the cane tip is the same as on a dark or light version, so for a blind person there is no difference at all. For a user with residual sight, however, the contrast may be insufficient — which is why grey is more often used not in the primary warning zone but on a guidance lane, or where contrast is provided by other means.
